Overview

I was the first technical writer hired by a biotechnology startup that developed imaging hardware and software for research laboratories. Scientists used these tools to capture and enhance images from electron microscopes. At the time, internal teams relied on brief handouts created by sales and support, so I established the company’s first formal documentation program and strategy.

Within my first week, I proposed a documentation plan based on Information Mapping (structured writing) to create clear, consistent materials tailored to scientists and research assistants. This foundation supported both print and electronic deliverables, evolving into a scalable content approach as the product line grew.

Key tasks I did:

  • Developed and standardized print documentation using structured writing for reusable content, reducing creation time and improving accuracy.

  • Mentored a small technical writing team while managing budgets and optimizing documentation resources.

  • Managed documentation projects across multiple concurrent software releases, ensuring on-time delivery within the Waterfall SDLC framework.

  • Oversaw the publication lifecycle for all print materials, including vendor coordination and quality control.

  • Authored clear release notes and integrated help content to support user onboarding and reduce support inquiries.

  • Collaborated cross-functionally with product management, marketing, and support teams to deliver accurate, user-centered content.

  • Led two successful content tool migrations, ensuring continuity and preserving legacy documentation integrity.

What I learned:

  • Developed technical and editorial agility by working in a lean team, navigating toolchains, migrations, and content creation across the full publishing lifecycle.

  • Built adaptable workflows across evolving platforms and shifting team roles—establishing habits in migration planning, cross-functional collaboration, and problem solving.

Impact:

  • Created a scalable documentation strategy that supported expansion from one to five products, without requiring additional customer support staff.

  • Delivered comprehensive documentation for overlapping product releases through structured planning within the Waterfall SDLC framework.
